FEAR & MISERY IN THE   THIRD REICH

by BERTOLT BRECHT
translated by ERIC BENTLEY
directed by JOSH SOBEL

Haven Chicago
February 2018

As Germany careens toward war, an entire society begins to crack, and the seeds of chaos and tragedy take root in the minds of its citizens. Josh Sobel helms an ensemble-driven production of Brecht's 1938 classic with a contemporary eye - a warning of how insidiously a culture can make space for atrocity, and a call to never allow it to happen again.

"HIGHLY RECOMMENDED... The sheer creative exertion and emotional fortitude on display in this production induces marathon-like exhaustion, leading to a euphoric endorphin rush when the house lights come up. Haven Theatre artistic director Josh Sobel’s gifts as a director match his visionary ambitions as a company leader... “Fear and Misery” tests the endurance (you have to hand it to Sobel for committing to the aesthetic so deeply that he forgoes conventional seating)... but more crucially it implores investigation, cultural and personal of equal import. All theatrical works invite conversation. This one requires it."

"HIGHLY RECOMMENDED... Josh Sobel’s direction and the stellar cast effectively bring Brecht’s searing script to life... Fear and Misery in the Third Reich is a tragedy at heart, a moving portrait of good giving way to evil. As a history lesson and a warning for the future, it’s completely worth seeing."
     -Chicago Theater Beat

"In this strong Haven Theatre production the talented ensemble moves effortlessly through the playlets, with the actors embodying various characters in varying degrees of Nazi Era-born dire circumstances... the main appeal is the experience of walking into the unknown and understanding we’re all lost in this together."
